The SDGs, Sustainable Development Goals, were created to provide a ‘shared blueprint for peace and prosperity’ as quoted by the UN. Adopted by all the United Nations Members in 2015, the aim of these goals are to build a sustainable environment, economy and society for developed and developing countries by 2030. There are 17 sustainable development goals that the UN aims to improve; no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry innovation and infrastructure, reduced inequalities, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water, life on land and peace justice and strong institutions and partnerships for the goals. All these problems are to be tackled by implementing the 17 SDGs. There are quite a few goals as you can see from the previous list but we’ll be focusing on goal number 13; Climate Action and how Covid-19 has affected it. Sustainable Development Goal number 13; Climate Action focuses on the ‘urgent action to combat climate change and its impact’ as quoted by the UN. SDG 13 has 5 main targets which covers multiple climate change problems and its impacts globally. The targets mentioned the strengthening of climate-related hazards and natural disasters across all countries, the need to implement national policies against climate change, improvement of awareness-raising, to ask developed countries to commit annually to Green Climate Fund and promote mechanisms and plans to tackle climate change. This is a rough look at the targets that’s the UN aims to meet by 2030 for SDG number 13; Climate Action, now we’ll be looking into how Covid-19 has impacted this goal, positive and negative aspects. Covid-19 hit us in 2020 (nearly 2 years ago), causing a global pandemic. Covid-19 caused most of us to suspend our day-to-day activities, like international travels, school and even just going to the supermarket was a hassle. But out of all of this we did get to see an improvement in greenhouse gas emissions. There was a drop of 6% in CO2 emissions recorded in 2020, however this reduction will only be temporary. Once peoples’ day-to-day life starts to be revived again, the use of cars and planes with increase the emissions again. The decrease in greenhouse gas emissions have motivated people to be more aware of climate change and therefore be willing to take action. Covid-19 has brought up some hope that our climate can be fixed however the UN has mentioned that there has been little progress made generally for reducing global climate changes. On top of that Covid-19 has meant that most economies were not doing very well due to the lockdowns. Exports and imports were restricted and countries that rely on tourists were lacking financially. Covid-19 has brought about the good thing that greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced however it also brought about the negative thing that economies are dropping. This is one of the major issues countries have to discuss, how to keep a sustainable economy and ensure greenhouse gas emission reductions at the same time and Covid-19 has definitely highlighted this idea more clearly. There has been a brighter side to this goal though because UN members have been able to find a way to balance out economic growth and climate change sustainability. Most developed countries have been able to accommodate this idea and it has worked quite efficiently for them. It’s the construction of renewable energy generators like windmills, solar panels and others. This is because most countries now are adopting the idea of using renewable energies as opposed to fossil fuels. Scientists and researchers have also been able to manipulate our day-to-day activities so they require less energy. The act of over shopping has also been voiced out as non-ideal to the public, educating them to become less wasteful. Reducing waste can reduce the amount of energy used to produce wasteful products. All these ideas have been adapted and taught to try to aim for climate action goal by 2030. Covid-19 has been able to highlight the underlying affects of economic growth and climate change, whether it’s nationally or internationally. Though it is limited, we still have time to turn this situation around and build a more sustainable present day and future. |
